Harry Styles has failed to land the role of Elvis Presley in an upcoming biopic about his life.

The former One Direction star lost out to Austin Butler, who has been cast as the legendary King of Rock and Roll.

Austin will star alongside Tom Hanks, who will play Elvis’ manager Tom Parker in the Baz Luhrmann production.

In a statement, Baz said: “I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist.”

“Throughout the casting process, it was an honor for me to encounter such a vast array of talent.”

“I had heard about Austin Butler from his standout role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.”

Austin was up against some major stars for the role – including Harry Styles, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ansel Elgort, and Miles Teller.

The actor, who has been dating Vanessa Hudgens since 2011, is best known for his roles in The Carrie Diaries and Arrow – but he’s also set to star in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which will be released next month.
