EXCLUSIVE interview with Mrs Brown's Boys creator Brendan O'Carroll

With his first movie Mrs Brown D’Movie set for a release this month, Brendan O’Carroll is top of his game, and it’s only the beginning.

In an interview with Goss.ie Brendan reveals the cost of his highly anticipated film, the opening of his new exhibition and how he was caught shoplifting as a child.

“It’s been an adventure,” Brendan stand while sitting in the Little Museum of Dublin.

The museum have just launched Mrs Brown D’Exhibition and Brendan is still in awe.

“I was embarrassed. It’s like when you were a kid and you got your first tape recorder and listened to yourself back.  And you think ‘that’s not me’. That’s what it feels like. It’s a bit overwhelming,” he told Goss.ie.

While most of the images surrounding the museum look happy and playful, Brendan revealed some of the memories are difficult.

“Some of it is a bit painful. There’s a picture there of me and my mother, and it’s the only picture of me and my mother. It was taken on my ninth birthday.

“Earlier that morning I’d been in court. The next day I had to go to Borstal, it was painful to remember that but still lovely to see,” he said.

“I was actually caught robbing , I was shop lifting. It was just a roll of sellotape. It was Superquinn, it was just after opening. It was the first time you could go into a shop and feel something before you bought it.

“So I picked up the stuff and I nearly made it to the door. But it thought me a lesson.

“I swore I’d never get caught again,” he laughed.

While the exhibition is sure to draw in thousands of fans, it’s Brendan’s first feature film that has everyone talking. The comedian says he does feel pressure to make the film a success.

“After the success of the first series, doing the second series is like that second album, anyone can make one album, you have to make it the second time. And then it’s the third album.

“This is the fourth album. I’m conscious we have a huge audience, but I’m also conscious that many of that audience aren’t necessarily a cinema going audience.

“A lot of them are stay at home watch TV audiences. It’s a question of can I get them off their arses and into the cinema,” he admitted.

In the movie we get to see Mrs Brown in the town she grew up in. Shot all on location in Dublin, Brendan said he wanted to bring Agnes Brown home.

“So I wanted to keep it as true to the audience as possible. Instead of taking them to Marbella or Mrs Brown does Dallas, I wanted to just expand her world.

“They know she’s a market trader so let’s show them the market. They know the family is always getting in trouble, so let’s show them getting in trouble.

“I wanted to show Dublin really looking great. I wanted to show it off. Dublin is fantastic,” he said.

While the show has millions of viewers for every episode, Brendan revealed their movie budget was actually quite modest.

“It was a modest budget of around 4 million. Which in this day an age is a modest budget when you have budgets of 200 million. But it was never about the budget, it was about the story.

“If it’s successful and we do another me then I’m f***ing going to charge,” he laughed.
