Calvary 'most successful Irish film of 2014'

He had huge success with The Guard and now Director John Michael McDonagh is celebrating after his latest film Calvary has already taken in €1.4 million.

The movie, which stars Brendan Gleeson, Chris O’Dowd and Aiden Gillen, has had the highest opening figures of an Irish movie released in 2014.

Calvary is also the 5th highest grossing film to go on general release in Ireland so far in 2014, falling only behind The Lego Movie, The Wolf of Wall Street, 12 Years a Slave and The Amazing Spiderman 2, with the 4th highest opening weekend overall.

Calvary stars Brendan Gleeson as Father James, a priest who has a week to put his affairs in order after being told he is marked for murder during a confession.

The Irish movie also stars Brendan’s son Domhnall Gleeson and Dylan Moran.
