A new trailer for Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin was aired during the Grammys last night, and we finally saw Will Smith as Genie.
In the first teaser for the film, we didn’t see the iconic character and fans were quick to question Will’s costume when Entertainment Weekly shared their cover without the Genie being blue.
The actor poked fun at the cover and assured his followers: “and yes, I’m gonna be BLUE!”
Speaking about his role, he told Entertainment Weekly: “There’s a little bit less mimicking, there’s a James Brown piece that we do but a little bit less mimicking.”
The actor explained how his role differs from the original and said: “The thing that will be the major addition from me playing the Genie is the hip-hop base. I think that’ll be fun for people.”
“I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world. There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavour in Disney history!”
Guy Ritchie is directing the new live-action adaption, while Mena Massoud will play Aladdin and Naomi Scott will play Jasmine.
Aladdin will be released on May 24th, 2019.
