Rihanna was honoured with the Humanitarian of the Year award at Harvard University on Tuesday.

Rihanna’s organisation helps children in need gain access to education, and she has also donated money for a breast cancer treatment facility in her native Barbados.

Honoured: Rihanna received Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year award on Tuesday

“I’m incredibly humbled to be acknowledged at this magnitude for something, in truth, I never wanted credit for,” she said during her touching acceptance speech.

The pop star recalled watching commercials asking to donate 25 cents to save a child’s life, and explained, “I would think to myself, ‘I wonder how many 25 cents I could save up to save all the kids in Africa.’

“And I would say to myself, ‘When I grow up, and I can get rich, I’m gonna save kids all over the world.’ I just didn’t know I would be in the position to do that by the time I was a teenager.”

Rihanna added: “What the little girl watching those commercials didn’t know is that you don’t have to be rich to be a humanitarian. You don’t have to be rich to help somebody.”

The Diamond hit-maker had received huge cheers from the crowd when she took to the podium, and she couldn’t resist flipping her hair and cracking a joke.

“So I made it to Harvard!” Rihanna said to rapturous applause. “Never thought I’d be able to say that in my life, but it feels good.”
