WATCH: Jussie Smollett gets emotional as he opens up about his horrific attack

The Empire star was brutally attacked last month

Jussie Smollett got emotional on Good Morning America, as he opened up about being subject to a homophobic and racist attack.

On January 29 in Chicago, the Empire star was approached by two unknown men, as they shouted racial and homophobic slurs.

The offenders then physically attacked the actor, poured an unknown chemical substance on him, and allegedly wrapped a rope around his neck before fleeing the scene.

Jussie was self-transported to Northwestern Hospital, and just two weeks later, the actor has given his first interview since the attack.

When asked about the criticism he has received from doubters of the attack, Jussie said, “I’m pissed off. It’s the attackers, but it’s also the attacks. You know, at first it was a thing of, if I tell the truth, that’s it, because it’s the truth.”

“Then it became a thing of like, oh, how can you doubt that? How do you not believe that? It’s the truth. And then it became a thing of, oh, it’s not necessarily that you don’t believe that this is the truth, you don’t even want to see the truth.”

When asked why he hesitated to call the police after his attack, Jussie got emotional as he said, “There’s a level of pride there. We live in a society where, as a gay man, you are considered somehow, to be weak, and I’m not weak. I am not weak. And we, as a people, are not weak.”
