U2 guitarist The Edge has lost a 14-year long legal battle, shattering his dreams of building a multi-million compound for his family in Malibu, California.

The 57-year-old hoped to build five mini-mansions on a plot of land he bought back in 2005 for $9million, but his plans have since crumbled as environmentalists said the build would destroy an untouched mountainside.

After his plans were refused, the rocker, whose real name is David Evans, tried to appeal his case through the California Supreme Court – but they denied his petition to review the case.

Speaking to DailyMailTV, Dean Wallraff, lawyer for the pro-environment Sierra Club, said: “He’s finished – the California Supreme Court was his last resort.”

“I’m very happy that the Supreme Court decided not to review the case because it brings a definitive end to this terrible project which would have caused devastating damage.”

Technically, it’s not the end of the road for the U2 star, as he could re-apply to Los Angeles County planners for new building permits – but it would take years, and cost him even more money.

Dean explained: “He would have to start from scratch, with new applications to LA County Department of Regional Planning for new permits.”

“Then he would have to get approval from the five members of the LA Board of Supervisors – which would be tough since the member who represents Malibu, Shiela Kuehl, is on record opposing Evans’ project.”

“All of that could take another two or three years – with no guarantee that either LA County or the Board of Supervisors would say yes.”

When asked if he has any advice for the rocker, Dean added: “Give it up and move on. Sell the land or better still, donate it to the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy so that the people can enjoy it.”

“Do something good with this beautiful piece of property instead of destroying it. Go somewhere else to build your homes!”
