Tributes pour in as Eddie Murphy’s comedian brother Charlie dies at 57

Charlie Murphy died at the age of 57 on Wednesday after a battle with leukeamia.

The comedian passed away at a New York City hospital where he’d been undergoing chemotherapy, his manager told TMZ.

Charlie was the older brother of 56-year-old Eddie Murphy and best known for starring on Dave Chappelle’s sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show.

Charlie also performed standup comedy tours and appeared in Night at the Museum, The Boondocks, Are We There Yet? and Black Jesus.

He worked with his brother on projects including Norbit and Vampire in Brooklyn, which they co-wrote the screenplays for, and he also had a role in Harlem Nights.

Charlie’s final role was as Marshal Williams in the Starz series Power, which will air this summer. He is survived by three children.

The star was mourned on social media after news of his death broke, with Chris Rock sharing, “We just lost one of the funniest most real brothers of all time . Charlie Murphy RIP.”

Russell Simmons tweeted, “Just came out of meditation and learned that one of my friends and my biggest comedy idol passed. Damn I loved Charlie Murphy … Sad to hear about the passing of Charlie Murphy. He was one funny, kind man. Sending love and light to his family and friends.”

“Charlie Murphy was such a kind, sweet, funny man. Damn. Incredible talent, even better man. RIP,” Gabrielle Union wrote, while Bow Wow said “RIP to a great one” and Wendy Williams added, “Rest in Peace Charlie Murphy. Thanks for the laughs. You will be missed.”
