Shawn Mendes reveals he feels the need to ‘prove’ he’s not gay

Shawn Mendes has revealed that he feels the need to ‘prove’ he’s not gay.

In Rolling Stone’s December issue, the singer admitted that the attention on his personal life is stressful: “I’d like to say I don’t care about it, but that’s not true.”

The 20-year-old referred to the allegations of his sexuality and revealed: “This massive, massive thing for the last five years about me being gay.”

“In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone—like a girl—in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay. Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing.”

Shawn acknowledged that the need to ‘prove’ he’s not gay isn’t his best trait: “There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.”

Two years ago, when the comments got too much for the former YouTuber, he took to Snapchat to slam the accusations about his sexuality – stating that if he was gay the negativity would hugely affect him: “I thought, ‘You f–king guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.’ That’s something that kills people.”
