Shakira charged with alleged tax evasion in Spain

The singer reportedly owes millions to the tax man

Spanish prosecutors have allegedly charged Shakira with tax evasion.

According to the Associated Press, the singer has been accused of allegedly not paying more than $16 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014.

The charges reportedly claim that Shakira listed the Bahamas as her primary residence for tax purposes, while she actually lived in Barcelona with her partner Gerard Piqué and their young sons Sasha, 3, and Milan, 5.

The Hips Don’t Lie singer officially declared herself a resident of Spain in 2015, the same year her son Sasha was born.

However, Shakira has reportedly maintained that she did not reside in Spain longer than 183 days from 2012 – 2014.

A source told E! News that the singer “has always complied with all of her tax obligations.”

They also added, “Shakira has already paid the monies that are allegedly deemed owed by the Tax Agency and, therefore, currently owes nothing to the Spanish state.”

According to the insider, Shakira’s team believe the “judicial proceeding has been initiated as a scare tactic to other taxpayers.”

A judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to put Shakira on trial.
