Scarlett Johansson was heavily criticised for wearing a Marchesa dress to the 2018 Met Gala on Monday night.

The label is run by Harvey Weinstein’s soon to be ex-wife Georgina Chapman, and the business was partly funded by the disgraced Hollywood producer.

The brand has suffered in the fashion industry since Harvey’s sex abuse scandal hit headlines last year, but Scarlett chose to wear it to one of the biggest fashion events of the year.

Revealing why she chose to wear Marchesa, the actress admitted that she wanted to support Georgina and her business partner Keren Craig.

In a statement, the Avengers star said, “I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers.”

Meanwhile, Marchesa released a statement which read, “We are truly honoured that Scarlett chose to wear Marchesa for the Met Gala. She is an amazingly talented actor who has incredible style and presence. It was wonderful to work so closely with her in creating this custom look.”

Georgina Chapman announced her plans to divorce Harvey Weinstein last year, shortly after The New York Times exposed him for sexually harassing numerous women.
