Ryan Reynolds has praised his wife Blake Lively for helping him mend his relationship with his father.
The Deadpool star reconnected with his dad before he died in 2015, after a long battle with Parkinsons disease.
In a new interview with ‘MR PORTERS Journal’, the 41-year-old discussed his relationship with his father, as well as his battle with depression and anxiety.
The actor praised his wife by saying she has the “gift for foresight,” adding that as part of the reconciliation, they named their first daughter James to honour his dad.
“It felt right,” he said. “All family relationships come with some complications. For better or worse, all roads lead to here.”
“At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad. My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy.”
The 41 year old also opened up about his struggles with depression and anxiety.
He told MR PORTER, “I tend to get pretty depressed and I have some issues with anxiety and things like that.”
This stemmed from his childhood and the difficult relationship he had with his father. Ryan described the relationship with his father as “complicated” and “fractured”.
“My dad was a tough guy,” Ryan recalled. “He was good in many ways as well, but he was tough on us.”
“This is not meant to be some sob story – everyone carries their own bag of rocks around and I am no different in that regard – but growing up in my house, it was never relaxing or easy and I know that, throughout my life, I’ve dealt with anxiety in different ways.”
