The spinoff will be a musical dramedy

Lucy Hale has been cast in the CW’s Riverdale spinoff series.

According to Variety, the Pretty Little Liars star will play the lead role in musical dramedy, Katy Keene.

The spinoff follows four iconic Archie Comics characters, including fashionista Katy, living and working in New York – as they chase their dreams to make it on the runway, in the recording studio and on Broadway.

Taking to Instagram, Lucy confirmed the news by writing, “Well I’m slightly freaking out ! Thank you @archiecomics / @writerras / @thecw / @warnerbrostv / @thatthingofwhen for trusting me to be your KATY KEENE. my heart is bursting.”

The 29-year-old is best known for playing Aria Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars from 2010 – 2017.

Riverdale’s Ashleigh Murray is also set to star in the spinoff, and will play an older version of her character Josie McCoy.

The CW announced the news last month, writing, “A now 20-something Josie McCoy sets off on a new adventure to make it in the big city.”

“More determined than ever to break into the music scene as the next Diana Ross, Josie finds herself forging new friendships, falling into new relationships, and, one day, becoming the star she is destined to be.”
