Oscar-nominated actor and playwright Sam Shepard dies after ALS battle

Sam Shepard has died at the age of 73.

The actor and playwright passed away at his Kentucky home on Thursday, a spokesperson confirmed to the New York Times.

Sam suffered complications from Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS.

The star got his start as a playwright and went on to write and direct movies, as well as starring in them.

He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Right Stuff in 1983, and also starred in Steel Magnolias, Black Hawk Down and Swordfish.

More recently Sam appeared in Netflix series Bloodline and the movies Mud, August: Osage County and The Notebook.

His final role was in the thriller Never Here, which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival last month.

Sam is survived by three children: Jesse (born 1970) from his marriage to O-Lan Jones, and Hannah (born 1985) and Samuel (born 1987) from his relationship with Jessica Lange.
