Katy Perry awarded MILLIONS in damages after legal battle with nuns

The nuns tried to stop the singer from buying a convent

Katy Perry and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles have been awarded $10 million in damages, over the sale of a convent which Katy wanted to turn into a home.

Back in 2015, the pop star agreed to purchase a former convent in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of Los Angeles for a reported $14.5 million.

However, nuns with the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart decided to sell the property to businesswoman Dana Hollister before Katy’s deal could go through.

Last month, Katy’s The Bird Nest LLC and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles were awarded about $5 million in combined attorneys fees, as the court found that Dana Hollister intentionally interfered with Katy’s purchase, and acted with malice against the singer and the church – so they opened up the second trial for punitive damages.

According to Billboard, of the $10 million in punitive damages, two-thirds will go to the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles, and one-third will go to Katy’s Bird Nest.

The Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary have owned the convent property for more than 40 years, but they haven’t lived there for several years.

And in media interviews, the two nuns who were behind the sale aired their disproval of Katy.

“I found Katy Perry and I found her videos and…if it’s all right to say, I wasn’t happy with any of it,” Sister Rita Callanan previously told the Los Angeles Times.

Speaking to Billboard in a statement, Katy’s attorney Eric Rowen said, “Katy is extremely pleased with the jury’s insight and understanding, and is hopeful that the jury’s decision will pave the way for her to complete the purchase of the Waverly property without further interference.

“For my part, I am very satisfied with the jury’s decision and believe that justice has been well served.”
