Johnny Depp is reportedly suing his ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million.

According to The Blast, the 55-year-old has filed a defamation lawsuit in relation to an op-ed piece in the Washington Post, which was written by Amber in December 2018.

In the piece, the actress opened up about being a victim of domestic abuse, but did not mention any names.

While Johnny’s name was excluded from the piece, his legal team have claimed that the op-ed implies that the actor “perpetrated domestic violence against her”.

In court documents, Johnny’s legal team said, “The article depends on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her … The op-ed’s clear implication that Mr. Depp is a domestic abuse is categorically and demonstrably false.”

“Mr. Depp never abused Ms. Heard. Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016. They were an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career.”

In response to the lawsuit, Amber’s attorney Eric M George told People: “This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced.”

“Mr. Depp’s actions prove he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behaviour. But while he appears hell-bent on achieving self-destruction, we will prevail in defeating this groundless lawsuit and ending the continued vile harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team.”

Amber and Johnny in The Rum Diary

Amber filed for divorce from Johnny in 2016, one year after the couple tied the knot.

At the time, the actress obtained a temporary restraining order against him, and alleged that he was verbally and physically abusive towards her – claims Johnny has vehemently denied.

The pair eventually settled their divorce out of court in August 2016, and issued a joint statement which read, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future.”

The actress reportedly donated her share of the divorce settlement, about $7 million, to the American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
