Hubert de Givenchy has sadly passed away at the age of 91.

The legendary fashion icon, who was the founder of the eponymous French fashion house, died on Saturday.

Hubert’s family confirmed the news via French news agency AFP.

Hubert founded the Givenchy label in 1952, but later sold it to LVMH in 1988, but remained involved as head of creative design until his retirement in 1995.

In a statement, the fashion label wrote, “The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. He will be greatly missed.”

Givenchy is now headed up by Clare Waight Keller, who is the label’s first ever female artistic director.
