Elisabeth Moss may have won the gong for Best Actress at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night, but she also won in the style stakes.

The Handmaid’s Tale star wore a stunning Atelier Prabal Gurung strapless tea dress, which she paired with pink Olgana Paris heels – but what many didn’t notice is that her shoes had a secret message.

The message was revealed by her stylist Karla Welch on Instagram, when she posted a photo of the sole of Elisabeth’s shoe, which had the word “Off” scrawled on it.

“You’ll have to guess what the other shoe says. Our note to the patriarchy #teamresistance,” she wrote.

Many fans guessed that the word on the other foot was a swear word beginning with “F”, but others have suggested that it could be a nod to her Handmaid’s Tale character Offred.

The popular Hulu series, which is based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, is set in a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States.

They should never have given us uniforms if they didn’t want us to be an army…????????????#emmys #handmaidstale

Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate.

In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred (Moss) is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.
