Andrew Garfield claims he’s a gay man ‘just without the physical act’

Andrew Garfield is facing backlash for comments about his sexuality.

The actor was discussing his role in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America as Prior Walter, a gay man battling AIDS in the 1980s, at an NT Platform panel.

“As far as I know, I am not a gay man,” he said, according to the Gay Times.

“Maybe I’ll have an awakening later in my life, which I’m sure will be wonderful and I’ll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I’m secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well. I adore it, but a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role?

“I had to trust that it was the right thing and Tony had asked me and maybe if he’d asked me, it was the right thing. It was as about doing honour, doing justice and knowing my herstory.”

Andrew explained he prepared for the role by having his friends over once a week to watch Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

“My only time off during rehearsals – every Sunday — I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru,” he said.

“This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act – that’s all.”

Andrew has come under fire for his comments, with members of the LGBTQ community slamming the actor for suggesting enjoying gay culture is the same as understanding the enormous difficulties the community has faced in the past and present.
