Will Young: 'Dublin was my haven after Pop Idol'

Will Young has revealed that Ireland became his “haven” after he won the first season of reality talent show Pop Idol.

Following his win, he set up camp in Dublin where he wrote the songs for his first album.

“I have lots of special memories of Dublin because it’s where I wrote my debut album,” he said.

“The city really became my haven, where I could escape and start writing for the first time.

“What I love about Dublin is you can always find people who are friendly and want to chat, which is what I love doing,” he revealed.

He also admitted that he was delighted when the marriage equality referendum was passed in May.

“I thought it was fantastic. It was a moment in history and I thought it was a great day for Ireland.

“It was really exciting It’s not just about gay rights, it’s about embracing a difference in everyone.”

The 36-year-old is just about to go on his The Love Revolution tour for his new album 85% Proof, and will be his first tour in four years.

“I’m really excited. There’s something very special about touring, and my new album has been written with playing live shows in mind, so I’m very excited to take it on the road,” he told the Herald.

“Also, having come from Pop Idol, I love that my fans are the ones who voted for me – that’s something very special for me.”

Will Young will bring his tour to Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on November 8th.
