The Guard director reveals Brendan Gleeson and Chris O'Dowd 'like a good booze-up'

The Guard director John Michael McDonagh has revealed that Irish actors Brendan Gleeson and Chris O’Dowd are “actors who like a good booze-up”.

The London-born film-maker, who directed 2014’s Calvary which starred Brendan and Chris, admitted that he only works with actors that are up for a few drinks after a shoot.

“Brendan [Gleeson], Don Cheadle, Mark Strong, Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Caleb Landry Jones, Tessa Thompson – they’ll never say no to a few pints,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

While we know Irish people are never ones to say no to the pub, John admitted that he hired Hollywood star Alexander Skarsgard for the same reason.

“I actually cast Alexander [Skarsgard] not because of his great performances in Melancholia, Disconnect or What Maisie Knew but because I saw a YouTube video of him drunk at a Hammarby football match trying to incite the crowd,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brendan’s son Brian Gleeson recently admitted that having the iconic actor as his dad did him no harm in the industry.
