Niall Horan opens up on Zayn leaving One Direction: 'His heart wasn't really in it'

Niall Horan has opened up about Zayn Malik leaving One Direction, and revealed what he’ll be doing during their one year hiatus.

Speaking to Eoghan McDermott on 2FM, the Mullingar musician revealed Zayn fell out of love with the band.

“Towards the end you could see he wasn’t enjoying it as much, his heart wasn’t in it as much,” Niall admitted.

“There was never any arguments or disagreements, or anything like that, I think he just fell out of love with it in the end.

Out of love: Niall said the band are closer than ever

“He had a couple of conversations where he had to make a few decisions I guess…if your heart’s not in it you shouldn’t really do it,” he explained.

“He made that decision and he’s happy now, we’re happy and everything’s worked out. It’s actually brought us, the rest of us, closer together.

Meanwhile Niall revealed he is looking forward to the group’s hiatus, and admitted he wants to spend more time at home, as well as travelling around Ireland.

“You won’t have a job in 2FM at all, I’m going to be hounding you to go on trips and little excursions around the west of Ireland,” Niall joked with Eoghan.

“It was a good call for us at the time, we’ve been hammering it out there for five years, five albums, five tours.

“Sometimes when you stop it’s like ‘woh’ and I think this is a good time for it. We’re at a good age where we can just stop for a minute, take a little break and come back to it in say a year’s time.

“It’s going to be nice…like the simple things of just going home. I’ve been home once since Christmas. It’s going to be nice to go home and see everyone a little bit more,” he added.

The Mullingar admitted that he and fellow band mates Harry, Louis and Liam have yet to agree a return date, but admitted they will sit down in six months time to plan their big comeback.

“We haven’t even stuck a date on it…we’ll probably just have a conversation about it in six months and go ‘right should we go at it again?’

“It was made into such a big deal…it happens. I’d like to think I deserve a holiday,” he admitted.

“I want to do a bit of travelling (when I’m off) and go to the places that I haven’t seen.

“We’ve been talking about renting a cottage somewhere in the country of Ireland for about three and a half years – or get a caravan and just go around the coast of Ireland,” he added.

Golfer: Niall wants to hit the golf course more

And Niall has revealed he won’t just be writing some songs during the band’s break. The blonde said that he hopes to get better at golf and beef up in the gym.

“By the end of next year I’d love to be a low single-figures golfer,” he told 2FM. “I’d like to be in some sort of good shape too.”
