Miriam O'Callaghan: 'I'm glad none of my children want to get into TV'

Miriam O’Callaghan has revealed that she’s happy none of her children have decided to follow in her footsteps and get into TV.

The Prime Time host has a very successful career as broadcaster but is thankful none of her kids have chosen the same path so far.

“So far, thankfully none of them want to. My eldest girl [Alannah] is a lawyer, my second [Clara] is studying medicine and the rest are all in college and school,” she said.

Tough job: Miriam is glad none of her kids have followed her into broadcasting

“At the moment, the two who have chosen their careers aren’t choosing broadcasting. I love it, but it’s quite an insecure career.”

“I’ve been lucky, but there are lots of brilliant broadcasters who aren’t working simply because there isn’t enough work around.”

Miriam reckons the reason she’s been so successful in her career is by sticking to what she knows best.

“I think one of the reasons I’m still so busy is I’ve never left Prime Time – it’s part of my DNA and that has stood to me,” she said.

Success: Miriam reckons she’s enjoyed a great career by sticking with what she knows

The RTE host regularly gives talks to teenage girls in secondary schools and stresses the importance of knowing that you don’t have to sacrifice having a family to have a career.

“I think the reason I get approached to do talks is people always ask if you can be a successful woman and have a family.”

“I feel it’s important that girls should realise they can be whatever they want and not that they have to wait until their 30s and 40s to have children,” she told The Irish Mirror.

“If you want that, then that’s fine – but I had my first daughter when I was in my mid-20s, so I want girls to know you can do both when you’re young.”
