Irish stars dominate British Independent Film Award nominations

Colin Farrell’s new film The Lobster leads the nominations at the 2015 British Independent Film Awards.

The comedy-drama flick, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos has received an impressive seven nominations including Best Actor for Colin Farrell, Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Olivia Colman and Best Supporting Actor for Ben Whishaw.

Meanwhile, Irish film Brooklyn nabbed five nominations, just after the second most nominated movies 45 Years and Macbeth with six nominations each.

Our very own Saoirse Ronan was nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance in Brooklyn as well as Carey Mulligan for Suffragette, Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years, Marion Cotillard for Macbeth and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl.

The news of the nomination comes as Saoirse received the New Hollywood Award from Ryan Gosling at the 19th Annual Hollywood Film Awards at the weekend.

Colin will fight for the Best Actor award alongside fellow Irish actor Michael Fassbender for Macbeth as well as Tom Hardy (Legend), Tom Hiddleston (High-Rise) and Tom Courtenay (45 Years).

Father v Son: Brendan and Domhnall are both up for Best Supporting Actor | VIPIRELAND.COM

Father-and-son Brendan and Domhnall Gleeson were both nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Suffragette and Brooklyn, making for some healthy family rivalry.

Irish talent definitely took centre stage in the BIFA nominations with Irish director Lenny Abrahamson’s latest film Room being nominated for Best International Independent Film, his previous work includes What Richard Did and Frank.

The British Independent Film Awards ceremony will take place on December 6.
