Ian Dempsey SLAMS Ray D'Arcy's cringe-worthy Jack Nicholson skit

Ian Dempsey has weighed in on Ray D’Arcy’s cringe-worthy trick on viewers when he introduced a US tourist as Hollywood A-lister Jack Nicholson on his chat show.

The RTE host promised the audience that he would be sitting down to interview the movie star – when in reality it was an American man named Norman.

Although trying to place blame elsewhere, Ian admitted his former Today FM colleague shouldn’t have duped his audience.

“I think Ray needs to listen to his team more. I heard him say that getting the Jack Nicholson impersonator wasn’t his idea —- well whose idea was it?” he said.

“I was gobsmacked because that Jack Nicholson impersonator turned up in the reception of our station a few days before.

“I actually felt sorry for him. He had already been in the newspapers so it wasn’t as if Ray’s TV show had gone to the trouble of jetting him in for a big stunt,” he added.

“As for the introduction —one thing I know in this business is you don’t play tricks on your audience.

“He also had Miss Northern Ireland 1998 on. She had some story to tell, but I’m not sure they got it out of her,” he revealed.

“But Miss Northern Ireland 1998? That’s so far back, it was the year I joined Today FM.

“Ray obviously has huge ambitions but I wouldn’t swap with him because I would hate getting the sort of grief he’s getting now,” he told the Sun on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the radio veteran admitted Ray’s RTE colleague, Ryan Tubridy, must be delighted the Kildare native is receiving criticism.

“I suppose it’s true that Ray has become grumpier and grumpier over the years. He has become grumpier on air with listeners too,” he said.

“Ryan Tubridy must be delighted because Ray now is getting all the flak instead of him. Ray’s afternoon radio show is okay but everybody’s heard the stories he’s doing.”

The on-air pair worked side by side on Today FM for 14 years until Ray left for RTE Radio One last year and Ian cleared up the myth they were foes while at the station.

“There was a myth that myself and Ray didn’t get on when we worked together in Today FM. It was noted we never socialised together,” he divulged.

“But I was on radio until 9am, and Ray took over at 9am — so it was impossible for us to see each other.”
