Iconic statue of Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott is due to be removed for repairs today after it was hit by a motorist in recent weeks.

The 2.4 metre bronze statue of the Dublin rock star, normally situated just off Grafton Street, was damaged by a motorist by breaking off a part of the legendary musicians guitar.

This is the second time this statue has had to be repaired, back in 2013 it was knocked off its plinth and caused serious damage.

The motorist at fault held their hands up by contacting the authorities to let them know what happened.

The Phil Lynott statue has become a Dublin landmark since its unveiling in 2005 just outside Bruxelles Bar on Harry Street.

Dublin City Council confirmed today that it will be necessary to take the structure away. They said that the repair work and reinstallation should be carried out in four to five weeks.
