Star Wars SMASHES world box office records

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has exceeded a massive $1 billion in record speed at the worldwide box office.

The film, which stars Domhnall Gleeson as villain General Hux, reached the milestone in an incredible 12 days, surpassing the 13 days it took Jurassic World to reach the milestone.

The latest sci-fi saga installment, which was partly filmed on Skellig Michael off the Kerry coast, had the biggest opening day receipts in Ireland and the UK box office history, taking in an estimated €13.15 million.

Success: Domhnall Gleeson plays villain General Hux in the successful franchise

The film directed by JJ Abrams, who hosts the annual Oscar Wilde Awards which honours Irish in film in February, took in a huge €836,845 in one day in Ireland.

Currently placing 15th on the all-time global box office list, the film is set to overtake previous box office hits such as Avatar ($2.8 billion), Titanic ($2.2 billion) and Jurassic World ($1.6 billion).

This certainly isn’t the end of Star Wars success as Disney plan to make up to five more movies in the franchise.
