Director of Maze Runner gushes over Aidan Gillen

Wes Ball, director of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, has admitted it was a dream come true to cast Aidan Gillen in the flick.

The former Love/Hate actor plays villain Janson in the post-apocalyptic action-thriller and was pursued by Wes to star in the highly-anticipated release.

“I saw him in Game of Thrones; that’s where I knew him from,” he said.

Sought after: Wes Ball revealed he only wanted Aidan Gillen for the role of Janson

“And also the last Batman [The Dark Knight Rises] and The Wire before that from HBO. When I signed on to do this movie I immediately asked, ‘Get Aidan’.”

Although set on casting Aidan, the American director revealed the Charlie star’s appearance in the film almost didn’t happen because of his Game of Thrones schedule.

“They knew how much I liked him and how much I wanted to bring him in, so my casting director, eventually she pulled some strings or something and got him in,” he told RTE Ten.

Thrill: Wes admitted it was a thrill to work with the Dublin actor

The 34-year-old film maker admitted it was a joy to watch the HBO actor in action.

“He’s such an amazing actor and just the subtlety… It was so interesting to work with him and find what the camera likes,” he revealed.

“Essentially, with an actor like that, it’s all about the close-up! He’s so subtle in his facial expressions and those little tics and things; it’s just fun to watch him.”
