Maura Derrane on Today Show ratings success: 'There's less pressure on us down in Cork'

Maura Derrane has had lots of reasons to celebrate lately after her husband was re-elected to the Dail and her chat show continues to be a ratings success.

The TV star’s beau, Fine Gael TD John Deasy was re-elected while Maura’s hosting gig on The Today Show has continued to draw in big viewers.

Several RTE afternoon chat show’s have fallen flat with viewers in the past but the Cork based show co-hosted by Daithi O’Se, is currently in its fourth season and recently enjoyed a peak of 250,000 viewers or 23 per cent of the audience share.

Maura reckons the show has been such a success because they’re away from the pressures of Dublin and have been allowed to “do [their] own thing” in Cork.

“I think because we are away from everything, down in Cork there has been less pressure on us – we could work away and do our own thing,” she said.

“We could test the market a bit more and it took us a while to decide what works and what doesn’t.

“The team behind us works very hard and the advantage of being in Cork is that we don’t have the big stars so we have to work harder to get better items on the show,” she told The Herald.

The Galway native revealed she thinks her on-screen chemistry with Daithi has helped the show become a success and bring in more male viewers.

“I think we have definitely added more male viewers to the show and we bounce off one another very well. The show has really settled and I think people have become used to having us in their homes every day,” she admitted.

Meanwhile, the 45-year-old divulged her 21-month-old son Cal is doing great.

“He is just a dote and he is doing great – he is keeping me busy but is so much fun,” she said.
