Spotlight On: Gely Giselle Gerka

Each week we shine a spotlight on an inspiring woman in Ireland and further afield.

This week we’re chatting to Gely Giselle Gerka, Beauty therapist, Services Coordinator and Aesthetic Gynecology therapist at Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic. She is also the Director of Gerka Clinic.

Gely is originally from Venezuela, and splits her time between Dublin and Barcelona.

She is the Official beautician of Miss Universe Ireland, and has a down-to-earth approach when it comes to creating the best complexion for each of her clients.

Tell us about your life in Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic?

I started working in Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic 10 years ago as the Services Coordinator. I’ve had the opportunity to travel all over the world, going to the top International Congresses to get to know the latest treatments and the most advanced equipment technology to bring them to Dundrum Clinic. After finishing my Beauty Therapist course I was able to start treating my own clients.

What are your most popular treatments?

Dundrum Clinic specialises in Laser Hair Removal and Tattoo Removal, as well as having the latest laser equipment to perform different cosmetic treatments and treat various types of skin problems. For me it’s a great satisfaction to be able to treat Melasma with our peeling treatment and also our Ultrashape for localised fat reduction, and microneedling treatment for scars.

What’s a typical day in your life like?

Currently I’m constantly travelling between Dublin and Barcelona, I’ve recently opened my own Clinic there (Gerka Clinic) treating the intimate area only, such as vaginal rejuvenation. On a typical day in Barcelona, I get up very early, ring Dublin and have a coffee while I catch up with my family on a video call. After breakfast I do a few minutes of yoga and then head off to my clinic, where I spend the day attending patients and coordinating my agenda with my team. A typical day in Dublin starts with hug therapy with my son and my husband, after taking my son to school I go to the Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic to start my work day.

Tell us about some of the celebrity clients you have worked with?

For me all of my clients are celebrities, each woman is successful in her life in her own way and we’re all stars!

You are a sponsor for Miss Universe Ireland. Why is this important to you?

The sponsorship is important for me because it gives me the opportunity to get to know many young women who, just like me at their age, suffer from some type of physical complex and it allows me to help them to lift their self esteem. Every woman is beautiful in her own way; she just needs the right treatments to help her feel better about herself.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

Seeing the joy on my patient’s faces when they see the results of their treatment, helping them not only through the effectiveness of our treatments but also with my inner force. As a women I’m now free from complexes and really enjoy my work, it is important for me to transmit this to my patients. I always try to convey to them that external beauty comes from within; the youthfulness on the outside comes from a youthful spirit on the inside.

I also give my patients advice on the type of treatments they need, I believe in prevention and would advise that at different stages in life we need different skin care routines. I’m not in favour of aggressive treatments; I prefer the bit-by-bit approach to get the results you want. Your skin is the biggest organ of your body and a lot of the time we forget this fact.

What was your dream job growing up?

I wanted to be a doctor, because I wanted to help people feel better but life happened and I ended up doing a degree in Law specialising in International Trade in my home country. When I arrived in Ireland in 2008 I began working in the Aesthetic sector.

Who inspires you?

I’m inspired by my own circumstances and events throughout my life and now by each woman who, like myself, wants to see the best version of herself.

What is your ultimate goal for the business?

My ultimate goal is to open my clinic on Avenida Diagonal in Barcelona.

What makes you stand out from your competitors?

Firstly Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic has been treating patients for over 15 years. We have the latest and best laser equipment available, with medical treatments approved by the FDA and a staff that is constantly training to keep up to date with new innovations in treatments.

Our Doctors all have extensive experience and all our treatments are carried out by highly qualified nurses and laser technicians. We also use the best available skincare brands.

What business women do you look up to?

I really admire Carolina Herrera, as well as being a fellow countrywoman she is a woman who, starting in business at an older age, has built a fabulous worldwide brand whilst maintaining high principals at both a personal and professional level.

What has been the high point and low point of your career so far?

The lowest point was the anxiety and fear of setting up a new business on my own in Spain, and the highest is what I experience in my day-to-day life.

What would you like to accomplish in the next 5 years?

I’d love to continue seeing the happy faces of my many clients all over the world thanks to my beauty treatments.
