OPINION: This is what it’s REALLY like to go to the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival has finally come to an end for another year, and Goss.ie witnessed all the action first hand.

Although the festival is luxurious and seen as one of the most prestigious events in the celebrity calendar, there’s a lot you need to know before jetting to the French Riviera.

So, if you’re looking to follow the Goss team and attend Cannes next year, here our some of our Goss.ie insider tips from actress Dani Masterson on what the festival is REALLY like.

1. Plan now for 2018

Most of the big hotels in Cannes book out a year in advance before the festival. If you are hoping to stay somewhere nice you must book as early as possible. There are a number of hotels in surrounding areas of Cannes (Juan les Pins, Le Bocca etc), however, you will spend most of your time travelling if you stay on the outskirts.

If you have a passion for fashion as I do, you will probably want to change your outfit for the evening. Staying in the centre saves time and money in the long run. If you want to do Cannes next year – book now!

2. No Accreditation… No Cannes Do!

As an actor, accreditation for the festival is essential. This would apply to anyone in the industry who is going there to network. Accreditation gives you access to the Palais where all the movies are screened and press conferences held.

It also gives you access to the International Village, Marche du Film and for other events during the festival. Also you are more likely to get into parties with accreditation. Accreditation opens in March.

3. You need the gift of the gab: Networking

Networking is vital for anyone who attends the festival. Personally I make contact with attendee’s before the festival to set up meetings. However things change by the minute in Cannes, so have a backup plan if you get a cancellation.

Business cards are a must in Cannes. Whether you work in PR or a hairdresser, you never know who you will meet and give you your next job. Cannes is not a place to be shy.

4. You get judged by how you look: Dress Code

One of my favourite things about Cannes is the dress code. It could be noon and you will spot a sea of people in tuxes and evening gowns.

Flats are not allowed on the red carpet. If you are lucky enough to be handed an invite last minute, it’s vital you have a pair of heels at the ready to strut your stuff down that red carpet.

5. Expect the Unexpected

As I mentioned before, things change by the minute. Of course Cannes looks like it’s all parties and living the good life.

But, the reality is it’s a working holiday, where you have a list of meetings, events and parties. You will be exhausted keeping track of all and trying not to let anyone down.

You may also get an exciting invite to a yacht party but may need to toss it aside to attend a networking party that will be more beneficial for your career in the long run.

6. Rain does not stay on the plane

Being Irish we are use to rainy dreary days, but not when we book a holiday. Hate to rain on your parade but rain is expected during the Cannes Film Festival.

Over the last ten years, its rained 30% during festival days. However it’s still warm and once your prepared it won’t put a damper on your experience.

So, now that you’re prepared – you can plan for a fantastic Festival de Cannes. It is no doubt one of the most exciting festivals and highlight of the filmmakers year. Bon voyage!
