Opinion: ‘Everything seems perfect in an Instagram world’

Each morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is reach for my phone, and no, it’s not because I’m expecting a text from a guy (he doesn’t exist right now).

It’s all because of my love for social media has got out of hand….I’m addicted.

I like to have a snoop on the Mail Online (and Goss.ie obviously) first thing, then check my many notifications on Facebook.

Then it’s Twitter and lastly my favourite Instagram.

It only hit me recently how we’re all living this perfect life through an Instagram world…

Celebs: People like Kylie Jenner share their ‘perfect’ lives | INSTAGRAM

Okay, so Instagram is not for everyone, but if you’re a fan of living life in the fab lane but only have twenty quid in your pocket, relax…you got this.

You too can live in the perfect world, just throw yourself in front of the parked Bentley outside the five-star hotel and pretend it’s yours.

The truth is, we all wish our online selves were our authentic selves, and we’re good at pretending they are.

This is a little snippet of daily life For most Instagram users including myself .

My Instagram account (samgirl21): I’m obsessed

We wake up early in the morning or not, we grab the perfect bowl from the cupboard, followed by greek yogurt, berries and honey.

We set the perfect place mat next to the coordinated flower vase and take a picture with the hashtags #bestbreakfastever.

Let’s face it …we have all seen breakfast.

But unless your granola is made of golden nuggets, there is really no need to share that picture.

After breakfast, we choose a cute outfit, perfect our make up with a filter, then we take picture number forty before we’ve even left the front door.

I’ll admit, I’m guilty of this behaviour ,and I’m exhausted just thinking about it .

By the time it hits 9 o’clock, I feel like I’ve done a full days work and i’ve still got lunch and dinner to go.

In the last 9 years I’ve been very lucky to travel with the world with my job, an ordinary joe soap like me getting to travel the world is not an every day occurrence.

Lucky for me, and my whole family, social media wasn’t really big back then when I was travelling (I was a hot mess).

And in the last two years I’ve started blogging about my travels on tour .

I really set it up so my family could follow my journey and for them to enjoy my travels .

I was posting everything from the countries I had visited to food and beauty and of course, loads of selfies.

The more followers and likes I got, I got more of a buzz.

I didn’t really think it would take over my life but I’m guilty of spending many hours perfecting my day.

But let me tell you, most bloggers don’t even leave house all day, but what we see is they’ve had the #bestdayever.

So I, like most people, post the things that are going to reflect the best aspects of my life and personality.

Don’t forget my face …

Recently, I’ve been trying to increase my number of Instagram followers I have.

Sometimes I post a picture and although it gets likes , some of my other friends will like a mutual friends pictures instead.

I do be fecking raging.

All I know is depending on what mood you’re in , Instagram has a way of making your day great or leave you feeling like utter crap.

Imagine having the worst day and you go onto your Instagram account and you’re scrolling through Insta and you see that Kylie Jenner has bought another Lamborgini and she’s got the matching Chanel bag too! (where’s that crying emoji face).

The high life: Social media can drive you crazy

In most cases For the ordinary looking in , they’re screwed really . Well, I say you’re not….Count yourself lucky.

Count yourself lucky that you don’t have to stage that you casually picked up a skinny , non fat, soy , Starbucks coffee because you’re so cosmopolitan.

Count yourself lucky that when you go on a date your man will recognise you because your filter free and you’ll actually look like you.

One girl I spoke to said: “I get jealous of other people’s Instagrams and i use that as my motivation to take a better picture. “

Celina from Boston describes how she once booked a hotel just so she could take a Picture of herself

lying by the pool and pretend she was on Vacation. She obviously went through extreme lengths to get the picture which is completely nuts but it brought the likes so I guess be smart Like Celina.

Mikey from London say’s his girlfriend is addicted to seeing other women in expensive clothing, jewellery, vacation spots , hot bodies.

He say’s its ruining their relationship because she wants to live that life and he an’t afford to give it to her.

As much as I love Instagram and will continue to love it ,I’ve learnt the nature of Instagram fuels Insecurity.

Being exposed to a world where everyone has less flaws can be exhausting depressing lonely and false to others.

To the others who are having fun and love living life under a filter , I’m delighted for you…

Pour yourself a nice glass of Prosecco and hashtag it’s Dom Perignon.
