These tips are so useful for anyone trying to get fit this year

If you have ventured into the gym for the first time this January with “New Year New Me” goals in mind, then you’ll love these tips.

A lot of people buy a gym membership, go a couple of times a week and don’t see results.

If you don’t have the means to be taught how to work out properly, it can be hard to reach your goals.

We found our top 5 best ways to get the most out of your workout, and stop you from wasting your time.

1. Habit and Routine

Having access to a gym is the first step on a full body journey. If you don’t have access to a gym, make some space in your home that you can move around in.

In order to get into a good routine, put time aside everyday to workout.

The key point in getting fit is habit. You have to incorporate the gym into your life so much that it’s as important as having breakfast in your daily routine.

Keep a gym bag with your essentials in your car or work, that way you don’t have any excuses.

2. Use Your Time Wisely

Plan out your workout before you get to the gym to avoid looking up online workouts or standing around and choosing your machines.

If you want to get serious about getting fit you must allocate your time well.

If you’re clueless when it comes to work out plans, ask someone who works at the gym. They usually have a background in fitness and are there to help.

If you want to lay low, simply look up the calories burned on your machine; 20 minutes on a treadmill is far more beneficial than 20 minutes on a bike – use your time wisely.

3. Be Food Smart

You’re going to the gym 4 times a week but you’re not seeing any results, how can that be? Simple – the golden ratio for weight loss is 80/20, for food to exercise. If you’ve been checking the amount of calories burned on your treadmill, you will notice that it can be very tough to burn calories.

Be aware of your food and don’t waste your calories on sugary snacks if you’re counting them. Make every meal meaningful and healthy, with of course some room for dessert.

Download an app to count your calories, research low-calorie, nutrient rich foods like leafy greens and root vegetables, or just become a lot more aware of the foods that you’re eating.

PSA: DO NOT starve yourself; put into your body what you put out, so eat more calories on a day that you work out to avoid exhaustion.

4. Stretch

Always take time to stretch out your body at the beginning and end of a work out. Stretching is almost as important as the workout itself. It can soothe tired muscles and it will definitely improve your flexibility.

If your gym offers a yoga class, go for it. Plan your workout around it so you do some light exercise beforehand and finish off with some calming yoga.

Yoga is good for the mind as well as the body so you’ll be killing two birds with one stone. Don’t forget to take some of those yoga moves and incorporate them into your stretching routine after your regular workout.

5. Get Your Body Weight To Work For You

The machines in the gym are intimidating and can be quite dangerous if not used properly. Avoid all the drama by using your own body weight to work out.

Take moves like weighted squats, the plank or lunges; these incorporate more that just one muscle group, meaning that you’re exercising more of your body which is using your time wisely.

When using free weights in your workout, start small and don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you take a bigger weight than you should you could end up pulling a muscle, or worse, tearing a muscle, which will stop your from exercising until you’re fully healed.

PRO TIP:

If you and the gym just aren’t gelling, find something else.

There are so many sports and activities in the world to choose from, one of them is bound to suit you.

The main thing is to enjoy your workout, that way you’ll keep coming back for more.
