Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen to keep their son’s godparents private, and their decision has sparked serious backlash.

According to The Sun, the couple are keeping Archie’s godparents under wraps because they want their son to be a “private citizen”.

A source said: “People might think Meghan responsible for this whole privacy thing but it is Harry leading the charge. He wants Archie to be a private citizen in every way possible.”

Previous royal parents, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, have chosen to the share the names of their children’s godparents  – but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are using a royal loophole to ensure Archie’s godparents remain a secret.

It’s believed details of Archie’s baptism are being kept in a separate “register held privately by the royal household on behalf of the Crown”.

Harry and Meghan have said that they picked “close and old friends” to be Archie’s godparents, but refused to reveal their identifies because they are “private citizens”.

Royal critics have slammed their decision to keep the christening private, especially following reports that the couple spent over £2million of taxpayers money on refurbishments at Frogmore Cottage.

In response to the news, GMB host Piers Morgan said: “Harry & Meghan need to stop playing these dumb cake-and-eat-it games with the media/public. If you want your home costs paid by the taxpayer, you reveal this kind of info. That’s the deal.”

In another controversial move which is sure to upset royalists, the couple decided not to allow TV cameras in to the grounds of Windsor Castle to record the royal family arriving to Archie’s christening.

Instead, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared some images taken on the day by photographer Chris Allerton on their Instagram page.
