Sophie Turner has revealed that her husband Joe Jonas “saved” her life, during a time when she struggled with her mental health.
In recent months, the Game Of Thrones star has opened up about her battle with depression and an eating disorder – and now she’s revealed how Joe helped her learn to “love herself” again.
The actress first met the singer when she was 20, while she “was going through this phase of being very mentally unwell.”
Sophie explained: “He was, like, ‘I can’t be with you until you love yourself, I can’t see you love me more than you love yourself.’ That was something, him doing that. I think he kind of saved my life, in a way.”
Sophie, who is now 23, was just 13 when she cast in Game of Thrones, and was 15-years-old when the show’s first episode aired in 2011.
Looking back, the actress wishes she never had her adolescence “displayed in public”, and admitted that her issues with body image made her “desperately unhappy”.
“Suddenly, everyone’s metabolism slows down at 17, 18 and then that’s documented. My skin and everything. People commenting on it. I was too aware of my body at a young age,” Sophie said.
“And it just kind of took over my mind, it was all I would think about. Calorie counting, everything. ‘Oh, I’ll just eat nuts today.’ I stopped having my period for a year—that’s when I decided to have therapy…I just think it’s so important everyone should have a therapist, honestly.”
Sophie and Joe first met in 2016, after the singer sent her a private message on Instagram.
The pair first sparked romance rumours in November of that year, but didn’t confirm their relationship until the following January. Nine months later, the couple got engaged.
Then earlier this month, Joe and Sophie surprised fans by getting married at a Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, after the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.
