Cristiano Ronaldo receives prison sentence for tax fraud

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed down a two-year suspended prison sentence for alleged tax fraud.

He must pay the Spanish authorities £12.1million (€13.5million) as part of deal to end a tax dispute and has accepted the suspended prison sentence according to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

The 33-year-old must pay a further £4.7million (€5.3million) in fines and costs following the legal proceedings.

The footballer won’t struggle to pay the fine having recently left Real Madrid to switch to the Serie A champions Juventus, signing a four-year contract worth €112million.

In 2014 he voluntarily paid an extra £5million (€5.6million) to try and put his tax affairs in order so the Portuguese man is reportedly furious to now be treated like a criminal.

As a result of the proceedings, he has put his Madrid mansion on sale and is threatening to shut down all of his business ventures in the region.

He will not have to serve prison time because the first offence for administrative crimes with jail terms of two years or less are not custodial in Spain.
